For the first time this day was celebrated on June 21, 2015, which was initiated by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 27 September 2014 in his speech at the United Nations General Assembly in which he said:

"Yoga is an invaluable gift of the ancient tradition of India, it symbolizes the unity of mind and body; is the harmony between man and nature; giving thought, restraint and fulfillment and providing a holistic approach to health and well-being. It is about exercise, but it is about the spirit of unity, the search for the world and nature.By becoming this consciousness in our changing life-style, we can help combat climate change. Then come in the direction of adopting an International Yoga Day. "- Narendra Modi, United Nations General Assembly

After which, on 21 June, the "International Yoga Day" was declared. On December 11, 2014, the proposal to celebrate "International Yoga Day" on 21 June by 177 members in the United Nations was approved. This proposal of Prime Minister Modi was passed in 90 days with the absolute majority, which is the shortest time for any day resolution in the United Nations

Here are the some points for the International Yoga Day

  1. Greeting yoga enthusiasts across the world on the occasion, PM Modi said that yoga has become the biggest mass movement and it has shown the world the path from illness to wellness. "Instead of increasing suffering, Yoga heals," PM Modi said before he went on to perform the asanas.
  2. Wearing a white t-shirt and a pair of white trousers, PM Modi performed breathing exercises and asanas on the lawns of the Forest Research Institute (FRI). Giving him company were thousands of other yoga enthusiasts who performed the asanas on saffron yoga mats. It was the Prime Minister who led the chanting of the first round of 'Om'.

This initiative has got support from many global leaders. First of all, Nepalese Prime Minister Sushil Koile Nehru said that Prime Minister supported the proposal of Modi.
More than 177 countries, including the United States, Canada, China and Egypt, have supported it. "Co-sponsor is the highest number of any United Nations General Assembly resolution." On December 11, 2014, the 193-member UN General Assembly unanimously approved the International Day of Yoga on June 21.
This day was part of the controversy. In order to avoid controversy during the 'International Yoga Day', the government removed the compulsory chanting of "Surya Namaskar" and "Shloka" from the official yoga program and urged the Muslims to take part in the event. AYUSH Minister Shripad Naik suggested Muslims to read Allah's name instead of Shloka during this event. The All India Muslim Personal Law Board protested against calling Surya Namaskar against Dharma. The Muslim minority was generally worried about the "Hindu agenda".
